85 East 4th Street today.
How many troubled spirits
still haunt this place?
The famous 1949 photo of the main staircase capturing a strange apparition which has been seen many times over the decades. Is this Mrs. Conroy, the builder's wife, who hanged herself on the premises in 1908 shortly after their only son died in a fall down these stairs? Is it the son? Or, perhaps, it is the spirit of Frances Green, a prostitute murdered in 1928 in Lucky Luciano's Palm Casino speakeasy on the second floor? Or, is it someone else?
On the second floor landing stands a 7ft ornate mirror. No one knows its origin. Some say that the Communists who later inhabited the building brought it from Czarist Russia. Patrons of the KGB Bar often claim to see a dark figure staring back at them with red eyes. Last year, a woman ran out screaming that she had seen the devil in the mirror. Had she one too many cocktails at the bar?
In Nov 1964, Dr.Arnold Pemberton of the NY Society for Paranormal Research was mysteriously hurled three flights down the long stairs to the marble lobby below. His body hit the floor with such force, the cracks in the tiles can still be seen. He remained physically unharmed...but his hair turned completely white!
Behind this door, in 1919, a retarded immigrant, Rebecca Mittlebaum, murdered her rapist by nearly decapitating him. Several documented sightings have been reported of a headless man lurking in the shadows.
In the 1920s, THE GREAT ALEXANDER, a well known Vaudevillian, held weekly seances in his apartment on the top floor. On one memorable night, he contacted a restless spirit that terrified even the great mystic.
