RADIOTHEATRE strikes a gory, gloomy, and ghastly chord with their radio styled stage performance of The Haunting of 85 East 4th Street in the East Village. This story is about an old dilapidated brownstone in lower Manhattan with a horrid history of death and despair brought on by greed, corruption and unsavory characters occupying it, meeting their deserved fate by an unseen evil bent on avenging the long lost souls of past misdeeds. Chronicling the history of the gruesome digs, the show is advanced by a duo of actors on stage dressed in black, changing voices, characters and accents as they seamlessly transition from one tragic incident to another, all the while, holding their audience on the edge of their seats awaiting the next clash of thunder, gunshot or the unsuspected crazed screams. One would think this is a yarn for the Halloween season, but I beg to differ as there is nothing more terrifying than being spooked on an occasion when you least expect it. For some great entertainment that you can take your kids to and save a buck, Radiotheatre is a best bet. Without reservation, I offer this production as a holiday recommendation. VILLAGE VOICE
RADIOTHEATRE's The Haunting Of 85 East 4th Street is a polished production that takes its pulp roots seriously and proves that HALLOWEEN doesn't just happen once a year. Using a heavy battery of sound effects and creepy music and performed by an expert cast, the show is by turns hokey and unnerving and never less than effective...and with such juicy material to play with, the actors sink their teeth in and present the building's spooky highlights with relish. From gangsters to shysters to prostitutes and just plain maniacs and ghost hunters, from the murder of a union scab to a most haunting death of a weirdo cult member... all meet with a sort of tragic fate...but played with gusto and conviction. The show's biggest asset is authenticity, performing the play in the very location where most of the blood-curdling events happened adds a disturbing series of unease to the production As written and directed by Dan Bianchi, those moments carry chilling credibility. RADIOTHEATRE is currently on hiatus while our space at 204 yrs old St.John's Sanctuary on Christopher St. in historic Greenwich Village is undergoing some constructive changes. But, our exciting productions shall resume in 2024, so please keep an eye out for that.
We are pleased to say that after a couple of post-Covid shows that failed to attract our usual crowds, our last show The 14th Annual EDGAR ALLAN POE FESTIVAL completely sold out to cheering audiences. Much thanks to our loyal fans who had finally returned to live theater after the epidemic ...and to the many Springtime tourists from around the world who had traveled to NYC and, while here, discovered our little, downtown theater company that's been going strong for 21 years!
At the moment, numerous companies our size and much larger, even Broadway shows, are still closing for good due to the audience fallout from the Covid shutdown in past years. Their attendance at this point is still not enough to keep many productions financially in the black. The same goes for a lot of major regional theaters around the country, as well.
Due to recent generations growing up with instant visual technology at home and $300 mil. movies each week in movie theaters and scores of films and shows on Cable TV as well... some stage producers feel that the days for traditional live productions, especially if they must sell expensive tickets to survive, much less profit from, are doomed. Even during Covid years, some were convinced, as I was, that only video recordings of live shows might be the future. Though our own audio recordings have always sold quite well internationally, our few videos have not.
Luckily, for Radiotheatre, we've always been able to adapt to any spaces while keeping our ticket prices low and production values rather high-quality. Our POE FEST proved that our own audiences are still here in order for us to proceed optimistically into the next decade. Every week we receive emails from admirers inquiring when our next show is due.
Unlike many other independent theater companies, Radiotheatre has never been supported by government or corporate grants or any sort of efforts to raise financial support. We've always paid our own way, often producing three large productions a year and sometimes on tours.
I believe that's because we are the only troupe to present our own unique brand of theater here in NYC for over two decades and, so far, we've done it well enough to attract a loyal following, fabulous reviews and many awards and nominations...meanwhile, keeping our heads above financial woes. In NYC, especially in Manhattan, that is an admirable achievement for any business.
With that said...I do hope to see all of you, both fans and newbies, at our next show in 2024.
Dan Bianchi, Artistic Director
